VW Caddy Camper Conversion: The Micro Camper Guide

The Short Answer

A VW Caddy makes a good micro camper for one or two people on short trips, as long as you buy the long-wheelbase Caddy Maxi. It drives like a car, fits in a normal parking bay and doubles as everyday transport. What it cannot give you is standing room, an indoor washroom or much space to sit out bad weather.

Caddy or Caddy Maxi

The current Caddy (the fifth generation, on sale since 2021) comes in two lengths. These are Parkers’ figures for the Caddy Cargo:

• Caddy: 1,797mm load length, 4,500mm overall.
• Caddy Maxi: 2,150mm load length, 4,853mm overall.

Both have 1,230mm between the wheel arches and about 1,272mm of internal height.

The load length is the number that matters. A tall adult is longer than 1,797mm before you allow anything for a mattress or bed frame, so in the standard Caddy most people sleep diagonally or with the front seats pushed forward. The Maxi’s extra 350mm is the difference between a van you can sleep in properly and one you put up with. If you are buying a Caddy to sleep in, buy the Maxi.

The height is the limit no design gets round. With a bed platform and mattress inside 1,272mm you can sit up on the bed, just, but that is all.

What a Caddy Camper Includes

The honest specification of a Caddy micro camper is:

• A bed platform with storage underneath, or a folding bed that uses the rear seat space
• A kitchen that slides out of the tailgate: a single burner, a small water container and a cool box or compact fridge
• A small 12V system for lights, USB charging and perhaps the fridge
• Blackout blinds or window covers

There is no toilet, no shower and no indoor cooking in wet weather. Most owners add a drive-away awning or a tailgate tent within the first season, so budget for one.

The Factory Version: Caddy California

Volkswagen built its own micro camper on the Caddy, the Caddy California. According to Parkers, its bed measures 1,980 x 1,070mm, the kitchen slides out on a rail with a single gas hob, and there were options of a panoramic glass roof and a free-standing tent. It came in both lengths.

VW UK’s website now lists the Caddy California only under used vehicles, so if you want one, expect to buy second hand. It is still a useful benchmark: whatever a converter proposes should at least match its bed size.

Converting a Caddy

There are three routes:

1. A modular kit or pod that slides in and out, so the van goes back to being a van. This is the cheapest route and keeps the rear seats usable.
2. A professional micro camper conversion, with fitted furniture, insulation and a 12V system.
3. Buying a used Caddy California, if the factory layout suits you.

Only two converters in our directory list the Caddy as a base, so this is a specialist corner of the market. Ask to see a finished build in the Maxi, check the bed length against your own height, and ask what the conversion weighs. The Caddy Maxi’s payload, according to Parkers, is roughly 650–700kg, which is ample for a micro camper but not unlimited once two people and their kit are aboard.

Caddy or Something Bigger?

Stay with the Caddy if the van is also your daily car, you travel in ones and twos, and most of your camping is weekends and short breaks.

Go bigger if you want to stand up, cook indoors, carry a toilet or travel for more than a few days.
