The Transporter’s Main Rival
The Transit Custom is Ford’s mid-size van, the same size class as the VW Transporter, Renault Trafic and Vauxhall Vivaro. For a campervan that means the classic compact layout: a rock and roll bed, a kitchen unit along one side and, usually, a pop-top roof for standing room and extra beds.
The current Transit Custom arrived in 2023. It matters for campers in another way too: the new VW Transporter launched in 2024 is built on the same platform, developed with Ford. Our VW T7 camper guide explains how the two relate.
Dimensions
These are Parkers’ figures for the current van.
- L1: 5,050mm overall, 2,602mm of load length.
- L2: 5,450mm overall, 3,002mm of load length.
- Width: 2,032mm without mirrors; 1,777mm maximum load width and 1,392mm between the wheel arches.
- Height: about 1,967mm for the standard H1 roof and about 2,467mm for the high H2 roof.
Ford describes the H1 as sub-two-metre, and that is the Custom’s big selling point: a standard-roof or pop-top Custom will usually fit under 2m car park barriers. Other sources give the height as 2,000mm, and a roof rack, solar panel or pop-top adds to it, so measure your finished van before you rely on it.
L1 or L2
L1 is the one that feels like a big car. It parks more easily, fits a standard driveway better and handles a rock and roll bed, a kitchen unit and a small amount of rear storage.
L2 adds 400mm of load length. In a camper that buys a longer kitchen, a bigger bed or a proper boot behind the bed for bikes and chairs, which makes it the better choice for touring beyond a weekend. The cost is a longer van to park.
Diesel, Plug-In Hybrid or Electric
The Custom is sold with a 2.0 EcoBlue diesel, a plug-in hybrid with up to 33 miles of electric driving, and the fully electric E-Transit Custom with a range of up to 201 miles, all according to Ford UK. For a camper, the diesel remains the simplest choice for long trips. The electric version brings the same trade-offs as any electric camper, covered in our electric campervan conversion guide.
Pop-Top or Fixed Roof
Most Custom campers use a pop-top, because it keeps the low roof for driving and parking and gives standing room and a second double bed on site. A fixed high roof (the H2 van, or a fitted high-top) gives permanent standing room and more storage but gives up the sub-2m height. Our pop-top versus fixed roof guide covers the choice in detail.
What About the Nugget?
Ford’s own camper on the Custom is the Transit Custom Nugget, with a tilting roof, a bench seat that becomes a bed, a kitchen and an outdoor shower. Auto Express reported in September 2026 that it had been withdrawn from UK sale because of low demand, although it remains on sale in left-hand-drive markets. If you want a Custom camper in the UK, a conversion is now the main route.
What a Transit Custom Conversion Costs
The Transit Custom is one of the most common bases in our directory: 26 listed converters build on it. Nine of them publish a price range, and when we checked in September 2026 the median of their starting prices was £22,500 for the conversion. Starting prices hide very different specifications, so compare quotes on the same written spec. Our price list shows every published range.
Who a Transit Custom Suits
It suits you if you want one vehicle for daily driving and camping, need to fit under 2m barriers, and camp in twos or as a small family with a pop-top.
Look larger if you want a fixed washroom (see our toilet and shower guide), a permanent bed and room for long trips. That is large-van territory: a Ducato, Sprinter or Crafter.
Finding a Converter
Ask to see a finished build on the current model, not the pre-2023 van, because furniture and pop-top roofs do not all carry over. Check the finished height, the payload left after conversion, and which rock and roll bed is fitted and what testing the maker states for it. Browse the Transit Custom converters in our directory, then request quotes on the same written spec.
