Reclassification FAQs

Do I have to reclassify my campervan with the DVLA?

No. Reclassification is optional — you can legally convert and use a campervan without changing the V5C body type. Owners usually reclassify for insurance clarity, ferry and toll pricing, and resale value.

What does the DVLA require inside the vehicle?

Seats and a table, sleeping accommodation (which can convert from the seats), cooking facilities, and storage — all permanently secured to the vehicle. Free-standing camping equipment does not count.

Why do some conversions get "van with windows" instead of "motor caravan"?

Since 2019 the DVLA also assesses external appearance. If the vehicle does not look like a motor caravan from outside — side windows, a living-area door, graphics, an awning bar, or a high-top roof — the DVLA typically records "van with windows" even when the interior fully qualifies.

How much does DVLA reclassification cost and how long does it take?

It is free. You post the completed V5C Section 7, photographs of the interior and exterior, and a covering letter to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BA. Processing typically takes 4–6 weeks.
