VW T6 vs Sprinter vs Transit: Which Base Vehicle Is Right for You?
Comparing the three most popular campervan base vehicles across price, running costs, practicality, and conversion suitability. With accurate UK dimensions and pricing.
The Three Dominant Platforms
The vast majority of professional campervan conversions in the UK are built on one of three van platforms: the **VW T6/T6.1**, the **Mercedes Sprinter**, or the **Ford Transit**. Each has a genuinely different character, price point, and conversion suitability — the right choice depends on how you intend to use the finished vehicle.
This guide uses real UK dimensions and market prices. Conversion costs on top of the base vehicle are not included here — see our separate costs guide for that breakdown.
VW T6.1 (2019–present)
The T6.1 is the aspirational choice. It dominates the mid-range conversion market and commands strong resale values.
**Dimensions (SWB):** 4,895mm long × 1,904mm wide × 1,990mm tall (standard roof)
**Dimensions (LWB):** 5,299mm long
The critical internal measurement for conversions is the width between the rear wheel arches: approximately **1,380mm**. This is noticeably narrower than the Sprinter or Transit and limits bed width — a fixed double typically requires creative joinery or a slightly narrower mattress than you might expect.
**Internal load length:** 2.8m (SWB), 3.2m (LWB)
**Engine:** 2.0 TDI diesel in multiple outputs from 84bhp to 198bhp. The 150bhp variant is the most popular for conversions.
**Purchase prices (UK market, 2026):**
**Pros:**
**Cons:**
**Best for:** Couples or solo travellers doing weekend trips to 2-week holidays. People who drive the van daily and want something refined and city-friendly. Those who want strong resale value.
Mercedes Sprinter (L2H2 most popular)
The Sprinter is the workhorse of the professional conversion market, especially for builds requiring a bathroom or serious off-grid capability.
**Available lengths:** L1 (5,910mm), L2 (6,360mm), L3 (6,910mm)
**Available heights:** H1 (standard), H2 (high roof), H3 (extra-high)
**Internal dimensions (L2H2 — most popular for conversions):**
The Sprinter's internal width is significantly more generous than the T6 — a proper 2,000mm-wide mattress is achievable. The H2 high roof provides genuine standing height without any aftermarket modification.
**Engine:** 2.0 CDI diesel (114–177bhp). The 170bhp variant suits the larger, heavier builds.
**Purchase prices (UK market, 2026):**
**Pros:**
**Cons:**
**Best for:** Couples or families wanting a bathroom. Full-time or extended travel (weeks to months). People prioritising interior space and off-grid capability over driving character or image.
Ford Transit (L2H2 most popular)
The Transit is the value proposition of the three. Its internal dimensions are competitive with the Sprinter, but it undercuts on purchase price, insurance, and running costs.
**Available lengths:** L2 (5,531mm), L3 (6,068mm)
**Available heights:** H2 (high roof) most popular for conversions
**Internal dimensions (L2H2):**
These dimensions are directly comparable to the Sprinter L2H2 — the Transit is fractionally wider internally and similar in length.
**Engine:** 2.0 EcoBlue diesel (105–185bhp). Widely regarded as one of the most fuel-efficient and reliable engines in the large panel van segment.
**Purchase prices (UK market, 2026):**
**Pros:**
**Cons:**
**Best for:** Value-conscious buyers who want Sprinter-comparable space at a lower price. Those doing high UK mileage who want low running costs. Families who don't place a premium on the badge.
Other Platforms Worth Knowing
**Peugeot Boxer / Fiat Ducato / Citroën Relay** — all built on the same platform. Significantly cheaper than a Sprinter or Crafter new, with a generous internal volume. Particularly popular among budget-to-mid conversions where space is prioritised over prestige. Less desirable on the used market but outstanding value for money.
**Vauxhall Vivaro / Renault Trafic** — similar footprint to the VW T6 at a considerably lower price. A growing number of converters offer Vivaro-based builds as an alternative to the T6 for buyers who want the compact format without the premium cost.
