Campervan Conversion Warranty and Aftercare: What Matters

What a UK campervan conversion warranty should spell out — parts, labour, water ingress, who does the repair — and which certificates are not a warranty.

A warranty is a promise about the build

The base van has its own manufacturer warranty, if any is left, and that does not cover a converter's furniture, wiring or water system. The conversion warranty is a separate promise from the workshop: for a stated period, they will put right stated faults in their work.

There is no single UK warranty length that every good workshop uses. When you compare quotes, write down the term each one offers and what it includes. A longer word on a website is weaker than a shorter term that names parts, labour and water ingress.

What to read before you pay

Ask for these in the quote or the contract, not in a brochure sentence.

  • Duration – months or years from handover, and whether the clock starts when you collect the van.
  • Who is covered – you only, or a later owner if you sell. Transferability matters for resale even if you plan to keep the van.
  • Parts and labour – some promises replace a failed part and leave you to pay for the fitting, or the other way round. "Parts and labour" should say both.
  • Water ingress – leaks at windows, roofs and pop-tops are a common misery. If water ingress is excluded, know that before you celebrate the headline term.
  • What is wear – mattresses, gas struts, wiper blades and tyres are not build faults. A fair warranty says so.
  • What voids it – further modifications, missed services, or a leak you did not report. Reasonable limits are fine; a clause that dies if you fit a shelf is a warning.
  • Who does the repair – the original workshop, or any competent fitter with their permission. If you live far from the build, a "back to us only" term is a real cost.
  • Response – how you report a fault, and a rough expectation of when they will look at it. This is aftercare, and it is worth as much as the legal wording.

    • Certificates that are not a warranty

    These documents matter. They are not a substitute for a warranty on the joinery and the systems.

  • Gas Safe certificate – evidence that the LPG work was signed off by a registered engineer. It is a compliance record. Read how Gas Safe applies to conversions.
  • Electrical certification – where the workshop provides it, it describes the installation. It does not by itself promise they will come back in year three.
  • IVA or type approval – a vehicle approval route some converters offer. It is about the vehicle's category, not about cupboard doors staying shut.
  • Habitation check – an inspection, often for insurance, of the living systems. Useful, and not the same as the builder standing behind the work.

    • Companies House, Gas Safe, NCC membership and insurance show on a directory profile only when that check has been recorded. They are not a warranty, and they are not confirmed for every listing.

    DIY and hybrid builds

    A self-build has no workshop warranty unless a professional fitted and covered a named part (the pop-top, the electrics, the gas). Keep receipts, photographs and certificates anyway — insurers and the next buyer will ask.     How to use it when you shortlist

    On each converter profile, read the warranty field if the workshop has published one, then confirm it in the quote. When you ask for quotes, add one line to the spec: "Please state warranty length, whether parts and labour are both covered, and whether water ingress is included." The answers belong in the comparison, next to the price and the lead time.
